The Randlords

A “Randlord” is a gentleman who made a fortune on the Witwatersand or Rand.

Who were these enigmatic gentlemen who shaped the city in so many ways?

Their gluttony can be seen all over town!

Some came to South Africa as stage performers, some as diamond mine labourers, others as sickly children but they all had one thing in common: The ability to make a fortune.

We will walk up Commissioner street and take a look at buildings these men left behind as well as the men who commissioned them.

(In)Famous Randlords: Sammy Marks, Ernest Oppenheimer, Barney Barnato, Joseph Robinson, Hermann Ecsktein, Alfred Beit, George Albu…

The tour is about 2.5 hours in duration and a 3 kilometer leisurely walk!
